1.  Sibutramine – some green coffee products were found to contain sibutramine even though it wasn’t listed in the ingredients. This is a dangerous substance which may cause hypertension, increased heart rate, hot flushes, anxiety, nausea and headaches as well as other symptoms.  The product stated that it contained Chinese herbs along with the green coffee. It was NOT made in USA.

Solution: Only buy Green Coffee Extract that is made in USA. If the product does not state where it is made, buy a different product.

2.  Fillers – some products contain “fillers” eg ephedrine, sulphates or carbonates. These are cheap ingredients that are used to substitute the green coffee extract.

Solution: check the ingredients.

3.  Pure Svetol versus Svetol mixture – beware that not all green coffee products selling Svetol are the same.  Some use 100% Svetol in their product, others use a Svetol mixture. This is usually a mix with GCA or generic green coffee bean extract. Occasionally the mixture contains a completely different cheaper ingredient.

Solution: even if a product says “Svetol” on the front of the product, read the small print to ensure you are getting 100% Svetol and not a mixture.

4.  Percentage of chlorogenic acid – this is the antioxidant in the green coffee extract that is said to be responsible for weight loss. Some disreputable producers use inferior quality beans that only contain minimal amounts of chlorogenic acid so you are not getting the benefit you are paying for. The percentage of chlorogenic acid varies in products.  It is usually stated that the ideal amount is between 42% and 50%.

Solution: find out on the label or from the producer what percentage of chlorogenic acid is present.

5.  GCA versus Svetol – make sure you know what you’re paying for.  Svetol is the more expensive ingredient. If you want GCA that is fine, just don’t pay the higher price for Svetol if you intend to purchase GCA. This danger only affects your wallet!

Solution: read the ingredients label.

6.  Caffeine – green coffee extract for weight loss still contains caffeine. In reputable products the caffeine is minimal. However, some products contain high doses of caffeine that can be dangerous.

Solution: only buy a decaffeinated green coffee extract product that contains low quantities of caffeine, usually around, 8mg of caffeine. In comparison, a cup of coffee typically contains between 100mg to 160mg of caffeine.

7.  Side effects – most information on green coffee extract states there are no side effects.  This is partly accurate.  There are no side effects apart from those associated with caffeine. If you are allergic to coffee or caffeine or suffer symptoms from ingesting caffeine then you will need to find a different supplement for weight loss.

Solution: speak to your doctor for advice.

8.  Pregnancy – all the literature available states not to take green coffee extract if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Solution: don’t use Green Coffee Extract if you are pregnant or there could be a chance you are pregnant. Similarly, don’t use if you’re lactating.

9.  Discount products – beware of discount Green Coffee Extract products that are produced using low quality green coffee beans. These products usually have minimal levels of anti-oxidant in them and do not provide any benefits. Most green coffee extract supplements produced in the USA by reputable companies carry out independent testing to ensure their products are high quality.

Solution: only buy Green Coffee Extract at or close to the market price. Only buy product made in USA by a reputable company.

10.  Pure  – even if a product uses the word “pure” on the label it may not be what it seems. The product might still contain fillers, preservative, additives or harmful substances.

What is Green Coffee?

Published in the Diabetes Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity Journal is a study conducted on both men and women who took green coffee extract over 12 weeks.

The participants each lost more than 17 pounds on average.

The participants were encouraged to consume a similar number of calories each day to what they normally ate. The lead author of the study, Dr J. Vinson, Professor of Chemistry at the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania stated “it has a significant weight loss” associated with it.

The most famous study was that undertaken by Dr Mehmet Oz on his TV show. Dr Oz used 100 female volunteers, of which 50 took the green coffee extract and the others took a placebo. The volunteers given the green coffee extract took 400mg, three times per day, half an hour before meals.

Those who took the green coffee extract supplement lost on average two pounds in two weeks.

Dr Oz does not endorse any specific brand.  He suggests buying a supplement with at least 45% chlorogenic acid and contains either GCA or Svetol. He recommends dosage of 400mg three times a day, 30 minutes before each meal.

Dr Oz called green coffee bean extract “one of the most important discoveries we’ve made to help you burn fat faster.”


According to Naturex, the manufacturers of Svetol green coffee extract, a clinical study published in the French scientific review, Phytothérapie, was conducted with 50 volunteers aged between 19 and 75 years, each with a body mass index over 25.

During the 60 days of the study, the people taking 400mg daily of Svetol green coffee extract lost an average of 11 pounds (5kg).
